What is dry cupping?
Dry cupping is a traditional type of cupping that was famous in ancient Chinese medicine, which is also called fire cupping.
This type of cupping depends on placing cups on areas of the skin determined by the therapist. In alternative medicine, these areas are called: energy orbits.
Leave the cups for a period of time ranging from 5 to 20 minutes, depending on the person’s condition.
Cupping is performed in 4 to 6 sessions to obtain the desired results, with the period between each session being between 3 to 10 days.
How is dry cupping done?
Steps include the following:
- Light a fire using paper or herbs inside the cup, then leave it until it is completely extinguished to empty it of oxygen.
- The therapist begins by placing the cups on the skin and leaving them for a period of time. When the cups cool, they form steam that expands the blood vessels in the skin and causes redness in them.
- Negative pressure is applied in cups to collect blood in the area. Negative pressure occurs on the skin in two ways:
- Light a fire inside the cups before use to empty them of oxygen.
- Use a device connected to the cups for suction after placing them on the skin.
- Dry cupping differs from other types of cupping in that the skin is not punctured to extract blood from it, which means it has less risk of infection.
- Silicone cups can be used and moved from one place to another so that the effect becomes like a deep massage.
What are the benefits of dry cupping?
The principle of cupping depends on the following:
- Reducing inflammation
- Increase blood flow in one area of the body
- Deep tissue massage.
